Sir William Orpen (1878–1931)
Oil on canvas
Tate. Presented by Francis Howard through the National Loan Exhibitions Committee, 1914.
The Irish artist William Orpen painted several portraits of Vera Hone, wife of the Irish writer Joseph Hone. Dressed in practical clothing with a fishing rod, this portrait reflects the increasing popularity of sporting pursuits for women in the early twentieth century. The loose handling of the paint is characteristic of the rapid way in which Orpen worked.Buy tickets
